Leaders of the Future No.3
A COMMERCIAL/MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
FOR SONATRACH STAFF
BP Amoco is proud to be working in partnership with Sonatrach in Algeria, the Netherlands and the UK. This partnership extends beyond the business of exploration, appraisal and development and marketing of gas resources, into a growing long term relationship.
BP Amoco is committed to the development of Sonatrach’s human resources as evidenced by the successful Post-Graduate Student Programme, which has been running for more than 5 years.
As part of deepening this relationship, BP Amoco, at Sonatrach's request, developed a short Business Leadership programme called "Leaders of the Future". The first two, very successful, versions of the course were run between November 1997 - March 1998, and November 1998 – March 1999, to technical and commercial staff from most divisions of Sonatrach's organisation.
This document describes a proposal for a third version of the programme, incorporating the feedback from the participants at previous versions.
The purpose of the programme is to broaden the understanding of Sonatrach’s selected graduate/high performance employees by taking them through a structured programme which will allow them to broaden their Management skills (both commercial and behavioural).
In line with Sonatrach's strategy to step out into the international oil & gas scene, the programme is specifically designed to broaden the outlook of National Oil Company employees.
The programme has been developed from a basis provided by a selection of very successful courses/programmes which are currently being used by BP Amoco for training of our own people.
The proposed format is as follows;
The programme will inform and broaden people;
· The Oil Industry & International Business practice
The Oil Industry Value Chain
BP History
Sonatrach History
· Organisation & Teamwork
Organisation and Change
Team Management Index
· Joint Venture Relationships
· Petroleum Economics
· Finance & Control
· Upstream (Exploration) Technical Overview
· Downstream
Crude Oil Supply & Trading
Gas Marketing
The
programme will develop people;
Assignments will be set, in order to build on the training programme by the addition of self-learning.
Emphasis will also be given to the development of skills for collaborative working and for presentation
The
programme will consolidate learning into practise;
· The entire programme will be pulled together by running business simulations, covering the entire content.
· Real examples will be used, so that attendees efforts can be compared with reality
The
learning will be embedded;
· by following up the progress of attendees after return to their work situation
· by the placement of some relevant, selected attendees into the SH/BP Amoco OOC
Profile
of Candidates
· Must be fully conversant in English. It is absolutely essential that English ability is good, or the pace and progress of the programme can not be maintained.

· Have been identified by Sonatrach as a being a high potential employee.
· Personally committed to the Management Development Programme and prepared to spend their own time on project work between the modules.

· Will be required to complete a questionnaire, and have a formal interview, before being accepted onto the course.
· Must be willing to work long training days.
The programme will comprise a total of circa 32 days active training, divided into 4 modules. The modules will be run in Hassi Messaoud and the UK, at intervals, covering late-October 1998 to March 1999.
The last module of the programme, the Asset Business Simulation, is the culmination of everything that has gone before; it simulates the real process. It benefits from the involvement of delegates with all skills; technical, commercial, legal, presentational, behavioural, etc.
One of the major benefits of running this module in the UK, will be that BP Amoco staff will also attend this module as delegates. They will have widely varying backgrounds, experiences and skills, mixed teams from Sonatrach and BP Amoco will provide a stimulating atmosphere for all participants.
